Welcome to Tweet Attack, where I analyze the musings of a man who can’t take the word “real” out of his Twitter name.
If the Senate Democrats ever got the chance, they would switch to a 51 majority vote in first minute. They are laughing at R's. MAKE CHANGE!
This seemingly innocuous and perhaps whiny missive highlights some of the techniques that got him to the Oval Office. The first is a vague threat that if someone else had power, they would abuse it the first chance they got.
This is, of course, demonstrably untrue, the Democrats had the majority in the senate in 2006, and did not change the rules to abolish the filibuster, even though the Republicans filibustered over 350 times between 2007 and 2012. Don’t make the mistake of getting pulled into a logical argument, or even tempted to give a history lesson. His goal is to make you angry, and by virtue of being wrong, he gets both sides riled up at once.
Then he says, “they are laughing at [Republicans.]” Trump saying people are laughing at us has been a huge talking point all through his campaign. There’s something primal about it. We all remember reading those comic books where the bully kicks sand in the wimpy kid’s face and laughs at him. That simple phrase taps into that feeling of vulnerability we all still have, because we were all small once. Oh, and also Hitler said it. A lot.
And, then his simple, two word plea to “Make change!” This is a pretty vapid sentence when you get right down to it. What else could he say. With only text to go by, I can’t tell…he could be whining, he could be making a clarion call to amend outdated rules and do the work the people elected him to do. But I’m guessing it’s more the first one.
As for the filibuster, the Republicans will never—and I mean never—change the filibuster. They need it much more than the Democrats.
